titleOfInvention Implantable multireservation drug delivery pumps
abstract A method of detecting a leak in an implantable drug pump (10), comprising: providing an implantable drug pump having a frame (12) having a first reservoir (14) disposed therein and containing a fluid that has one or more drug, and a second reservoir (16) arranged therein, at least one inlet port (18) formed in the frame and in communication with at least one of the first and second reservoirs, an outlet port (30 ) formed in the frame and adapted to release a fluid to the body of a patient, a first programmable valve (22) in fluid communication with the first reservoir and the outlet port, the first valve being movable between a closed position, in which fluid is prevented from flowing from the first reservoir to the outlet port, and an open position, in which fluid is free to flow from the first reservoir to the outlet port, a second programmable valve (24) in fluid communication with the second deposit o and the outlet port, the second valve being movable between a closed position, in which fluid is prevented from flowing from the second reservoir to the outlet port, and an open position, in which fluid is free to flow from the second reservoir to the outlet port, and a drive mechanism (26) effective to drive fluid from the first and second reservoirs to the outlet port to release fluid to the body of a patient; causing the first valve to move to the closed position; causing the second valve to move to the open position; and characterized in that; the second fluid reservoir contains a radiolucent fluid; activating the drive mechanism to cause the radiolucent fluid disposed within the second reservoir to flow through the valve and into the outlet port to be released into the body of a patient; where the flow of radiolucent fluid through the pump can be viewed radiographically to determine if there is any leakage in the implantable drug pump and the structures connected to the implantable drug pump.
