abstract | A method of producing a transgenic plant with improved or enhanced nitrogen utilization comprising: a) transforming a plant cell with a nucleic acid encoding a functional GATA transcription factor, and b) using the plant cell in the production of a plant that express said nucleic acid, in which the expression of the nucleic acid results in the plant having a high level of expression of the functional transcription factor CAT compared to a plant that has not been transformed with the nucleic acid; wherein the nucleic acid encoding the functional GATA transcription factor comprises: i) the nucleotide sequence of SEQ ID NO: 3; or ii) a nucleic acid capable of hybridizing with a sequence complementary to a nucleotide sequence of SEQ ID NO: 3 under hybridization conditions comprising 7% sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), 0.5 M NaPO4, EDTA1 mM a 50 ° C with washings in 0.1X SSC, 0.1% SDS at 65 ° C. |
