abstract A surgical barrier suitable for inhibiting the formation of adhesions in a patient who has undergone a surgical procedure comprising: a) a wound-oriented polymeric coating comprising an enteric polymer, wherein said enteric polymer is soluble at a pH greater than 3.0 and is selected from the group consisting of: hydroxypropylmethylcellulose phthalate; hydroxypropyl methylcellulose acetate succinate; members selected from the group consisting of polyvinyl acetate phthalate, cellulose acetate butyrate, cellulose acetate trimellitate, cellulose acetate propionate and cellulose acetate phthalate, salts, copolymers and combinations thereof; dimethyl cellulose acetate; a polymethacrylate based polymer comprised of poly (methacrylic acid) poly (methyl methacrylate); and salts, copolymers and combinations thereof. and b) at least one flexible substrate, wherein said at least one flexible substrate has at least one outer surface and comprises one or more oxidized polysaccharides; wherein said polymeric coating is applied to said at least one flexible substrate to substantially cover at least one outer surface thereof.
