abstract Microdevice (11) implantable in the eye to improve glaucoma or a disease causing ocular overpressure, the microdevice comprising: a drainage conduit (15) having an implantable inlet end (17) in fluid communication with the aqueous humor in the eyeball (13) from a patient, and an opposite drainage end (19) adapted to drain fluid into surrounding tissue, an actuator (21) comprising a normally closed valve disposed in said drainage conduit, means (23) for detecting the fluid pressure in said drain conduit between said inlet end and said valve and opening said valve in response to detection of overpressure therein, and a power source (43) connected to said actuator and to said sensing means, characterized in that said valve It comprises an actuator diaphragm (21) comprising a structure that includes a conductive or other conjugated polymeric material (29) and a membrane made of a materialp electrically deformable biocompatible olymeric membrane (27) wherein said detector responds to pressure within said ocular cavity to electrically cause said diaphragm to move to a position that opens said drainage conduit
