abstract A process for the manufacture of a thiolactone of the general formula ** Formula ** in which each R5, each independently, signifies hydrogen, substituted or unsubstituted alkyl, substituted or unsubstituted alkenyls, substituted or unsubstituted cycloalkyl, substituted aryl or unsubstituted, optionally aromatically substituted arylalkyl, optionally aromatically substituted arylalkenyl, cycloalkyl moiety substituted or unsubstituted cycloalkylalkyl, heterocyclyl, unsubstituted or substituted alkanoyl, unsubstituted or substituted aroyl, unsubstituted or substituted alkylsulfonyl, or non-substituted arylsulfonyl substituted, or a silyl group Si (alkyl) 3, Si (aryl) 3 or Si (alkyl) 1 or 2 (aryl) 2 or 1, characterized by hydrogenating a cyclic thioanhydride of the general formula ** Formula ** in which R1 and R2 have the meanings given above, in the presence of a Group VIII metal complex catalyst, and in which the catalyst is chiral, and wherein the metal or metal constituent of the metal complex catalyst is used in an amount, relative to the amount of cyclic thioanhydride starting material, in the range of 0.0001 to 10% by mole, preferably 0.001 to 10%. by mole, and most preferably 0.1 to 5% by mole.
