The present invention provides a positioning device that has a high mechanical stability so it can be incorporated into a local probe microscope, being operable in cryogenic environments, especially at low temperatures, at very low temperatures, and at temperatures less than 100 mK, and additionally in the presence of high magnetic fields. The device comprises a base attached to the local probe microscope, a sample holder, guide means between the base and the sample holder and an actuator located outside the low-temperature chamber. Thermally insulating force transmission means transmits the actuator drive to the specimen holder. The friction between the base and the sample holder is minimized to the maximum. |
