abstract | Process for the preparation of an alkanediol and a dialkyl carbonate comprising: (a) reacting an alkylene carbonate and an alkanol feed in a first reaction zone under transesterification conditions to obtain a mixture of dialkyl carbonate products, alkanolsin convert, alkanediol, unconverted alkylene carbonate and dimers of alkanediol; (b) separate dialkyl carbonate and alkanol from the product mixture to obtain a tail product stream containing alkanediol, unconverted alkylene carbonate and dimers of alkanediol; (c) recover dialkyl carbonate; and (d) separating the alkanediol from the tail product stream to leave a recirculation stream comprising unconverted alkylene carbonate and dimers of the alkanediol, a process further comprising: (e) passing at least part of the recirculation stream to a second reaction zone in which the alkanediol dimers are converted to high boiling alkanediol oligomers, producing an oligomer containing oligomers; (f) separating the high boiling oligomers from the effluent containing the oligomers producing a remaining stream that contains alkylene carbonate; and (g) recycle the remaining stream containing alkylene carbonate to the first reaction zone. |
