Potassium-binding polymer for use in a therapeutic or prophylactic procedure for treating hyperkalemia co-administered with a drug that causes potassium retention, in which the potassium-binding polymer comprises) acid groups selected from the group consisting of sulfonic groups ( -SO3-), sulfuric (-OSO3-), carboxylic (-CO2-), phosphonic (-PO3-), phosphoric (-OPO3-) and sulfamate (-NHSO3-), and b) a pKa reduction substituent located adjacent to the acid group, wherein the electron extraction substituent is selected from the group consisting of a hydroxyl group, an ether group, an ester group and a dehalide atom. |
