abstract |
A method for diagnosing a disease of bacterial or fungal origin in a subject, wherein said disease is pneumonia or septicemia, said method comprising the step of measuring the level of sTREM-1 (soluble form of the trigger receptor expressed in myeloid-1 cells) in a biological sample of body fluid obtained from said subject, compare the measured level of sTREM-1 in the sample with an average level in a control population that does not suffer from such a bacterial or fungal disease, with high levels of sTREM-1 being indicative compared to said control of the presence or extent of said disease of bacterial or fungal origin in the patient, wherein said step of measuring the level of sTREM-1 in turn comprises the steps of: (a) contacting said biological sample with a antibody capable of specifically binding asTREM-1; and (b) detect the level of sTREM-1 present in the sample by observing the level of binding between said antibody and sTREM-1. |
