abstract A method for preparing a defunctionalized alkylenedioxyheterocycle polymer or copolymer comprising the steps of: providing a solution comprising a functionalized alkylenedioxyheterocycle polymer or copolymer with polycarboxylic acid derivative and at least a first solvent, wherein the functionalized alkylenedioxyheterocycle repeating units with polycarboxylic acid derivative of the polymer or copolymer comprise: ** Formula ** wherein x is 0 to 3; X is S, O or NR '' '; and R is independently H, - (CH2) m-YC (O) R ', - (CH2) mC (O) YR', - (CH2) mO- (CH2) vYC (O) R ', - (CH2) mO- (CH2) vC (O) YR ', - (CH2) m-OCHz (CH3) and [(CH2) wYC (O) R'] 3-zo - (CH2) mOCHz (CH3) and [(CH2) wC (O) YR '] 3-z where at least two groups R are - (CH2) m-YC (O) R', - (CH2) mC (O) YR ', - (CH2) mO (CH2) vYC (O) R ', - (CH2) mO- (CH2) vC (O) YR', - (CH2) m-OCHz (CH3) and [(CH2) wYC (O) R '] 3-zo - (CH2 ) mOCHz (CH3) and [(CH2) wC (O) YR '] 3-z; m is 1 to 8; y is 0 to 2; z is 0 to 2; y + z is 0 to 2; w is 1 to 8; v is 2 to 8; Y is O, R 'is a straight chain, branched, cyclic or cyclic substituted alkyl group of 1 to 12 carbons, and R' 'is H, straight chain alkyl, branched chain, cyclic or substituted cyclic group of 1 at 12 carbons, aryl, benzyl, alkylaryl, CH2C (O) OR '' '' or CH2OC (O) R '' '' where R '' '' is H, straight chain alkyl group, branched chain, cyclic or cyclic substituted from 1 to 12 carbons, aryl, benzyl or alkylaryl, and wherein one or more co-repeat units are derived from monomers selected from the group consisting of thiophene, bitiophene, tertiophene, 3-methylthiophene, 3-alkylthiophene (alkyl = C2 to C20), 3-methoxythiophene, 3-alkoxythiophene (alkoxy = C2 to C20), 3, 4-ethylenedioxythiophene, 3, 4-propylenedioxythiophene, 3, 4-butylenedioxythiophene, pyrrole, bipyrrole, 3-methylpyrrole, 3-alkylpyrrole (alkyl = C2 to C20), 3-methoxypyrrole, 3-alkoxypyrrole (alkoxy = C2 to C20), 3, 4-ethylenedioxypyrrole, 3, 4-propylenedioxypyrrole, 3, 4-butylenedioxypyrrole, N-methylpyrrole, N-al chylpyrrole (alkyl = C2 to C20), N-methyl-3, 4-ethylenedioxypyrrole, N-alkyl-3, 4-ethylenedioxypyrrole (alkyl = C2 to C20), N-methyl-3, 4-propylenedioxypyrrole, N-alkyl-3, 4-propylenedioxypyrrole (alkyl = C2 to C20), carbazole, N-methylcarbazole and N-alkylcarbazole (alkyl = C2 to C20); and wherein the first solvent is selected from the group consisting of chloroform, methylene chloride, ethyl acetate, toluene and tetrahydrofuran (THF); defunctionalize the functionalized alkylenedioxyheterocycle polymer or copolymer with polycarboxylic acid derivative in the presence of a solution comprising a rupture reagent and a second solvent comprising water or an alcohol in a defunctionalized alkylenedioxyheterocycle copolymer or polymer where the alkylenedioxyheterocycle repeat units Defunctionalized include: ** Formula ** where x is 0 to 3; X is S, O or NR '' '; and R is independently H, - (CH2) mZ, - (CH2) mO- (CH2) vZ or - (CH2) mOCHz [(CH2) wZ] 3-z where at least two groups R are - (CH2) mZ, - (CH2) mO- (CH2) vZ or - (CH2) m-OCHz (CH3) and [(CH2) wZ] 3y-z; m is 1 to 8; y is 0 to 2; z is 0 to 2; y + z is 0 to 2; w is 1 to 8; v is 2 to 8, and Z is OH or C (O) OH; and R '' 'is H, straight chain, branched, cyclic or cyclic substituted alkyl group of 1 to 12 carbons, aryl, benzyl, alkylaryl, CH2C (O) OR' '' 'or CH2OC (O) R' ' '' where R '' '' is H, straight chain, branched, cyclic or cyclic substituted alkyl group of 1 to 12 carbons, aryl, benzyl or alkylaryl, with a polymerization degree of 10 to 1,000, the fraction of units of functionalized alkylenedioxyheterocycle with polycarboxylic acid derivative is 0.1 to 1.0, wherein the defunctionalized alkylenedioxyheterocycle polymer or copolymer is insoluble in the second solvent.
