abstract A method for producing hygroscopic resin particles with an average particle size of the primary particles (d) and an average particle size of the secondary particles (D) that satisfy the formula ratio, 5d / 3 + 150 <D < 5d + 150, comprising the steps: (1) subjecting a water-soluble ethylenically unsaturated monomer to a first stage of reverse phase suspension polymerization reaction in a petroleum hydrocarbon solvent, in the presence of a stabilizer dispersion, to give spherical primary particles having an average particle size (d) of 30 to 130 μm; (2) cooling the polymerization reaction solution, to precipitate the dispersion stabilizer, and (3) performing a second stage of reverse phase suspension polymerization reaction by adding an ethylenically unsaturated, water soluble monomer for the second stage, to the polymerization reaction solution, to agglomerate the primary particles, to give secondary particles having an average particle size (D) of 200 to 500 µm; in which the average particle size of the primary and secondary particles, (d) and (D) is determined as described in the description, and in which the water-soluble ethylenically unsaturated monomer that is used in the second stage it is added in an amount that varies from 110 to 200 parts by mass, based on 100 parts by mass of the monomer for the first stage.
