IMPLANT OF SPINAL CORE. |
abstract |
A spinal nucleus implant for replacement of at least a portion of the nucleus pulposus tissue removed from a spinal disc of a living vertebrate to restore the function of said spinal disc and related vertebral joint, and implantable in the cavity created by said removal of the nucleus pulposus tissue, comprising: an inflatable, biomimetic plastic, which has a hydrophobic phase that has high crystallinity and low water content and with a hydrophilic phase that has low crystallinity and a high water content, said biomimetic plastic having a shape inherent in which it has a polymeric network relaxed in a state of complete hydration, which has an insertion form in which it is at least partially dehydrated to a xerogel state and conformable in a compacted mode for maximum efficiency of surgical insertion, and capable of expansion due to partial rehydration in situ in a resting form that conforms a substantially with the size and shape of said cavity and is capable of an osmotic movement of liquid through the same response to changes in external pressure in order to increase and decrease the liquid content in its hydrated state, characterized in that said biomimetic plastic it is anisotropically inflatable, having a preferred swelling in a vertical plane and suppressed swelling in horizontal planes. |
