abstract A medical system that provides a medical device that can be placed within an area of the gastroesophageal junction of a patient who has an esophagus and a stomach, the system comprising: a prosthetic device (10) having a proximal portion of the prosthetic device that it can be placed within the area of the gastroesophageal junction so that a proximal opening (12) thereof is substantially aligned with the esophagus, and that it has a distal opening (14) and a central passage between the proximal and distal openings (12 , 14); characterized by a plurality of flow limiting inserts (16a, 16b) that can be connected and disconnected from a distal portion of the prosthetic device and defining respective outlet holes (15a, 18b) of different sizes when connected, and defining each insert (16a, 16b) an outlet opening (18a, 18b) smaller than said distal opening (14) and being constructed and proportioned to reduce the rate at which the ingested food circulates from the outlet opening (18a, 18b) inside of the stomach, whereby an appropriate medical device for an individual patient can be provided by selection of the insert.
