abstract | Process for the preparation of gabapentin of formula 1 ** (See formula) ** comprising: (i) preparing an aqueous solution of gabapentin hydrochloride in water with a proportion of a part by weight of gabapentin hydrochloride with respect to 0, 5-3 parts by weight of water; (ii) preparing an aqueous solution of sodium or potassium hydroxide in a concentration of the order of 40-50% w / w; (iii) add 0.08 to 0.3 parts by weight of the solution obtained in phase (ii) to 1.5-4 parts by weight of the solution obtained in phase (i) at a temperature in a range from 0 to 20 degrees C in the form of a resulting solution; (iv) gradually heat the resulting solution to a temperature in a range of 50-90 degrees C; (v) gradually cooling the resulting solution to a temperature in a range of 0 to 15 degrees C to obtain a precipitate; (vi) let the precipitate stand for a period of time between 0.5 and 8 hours at a temperature in the range of 0 to 15 degrees C; (vii) separate the precipitate from its mother liquor by conventional methods; and (viii) recrystallize the precipitate from a mixture of isopropyl alcohol (IPA), methanol and water to obtain gabapentin with a purity greater than 99.5% and another mother liquor. |
