abstract Use of a derivative of methane bisphosphonic acid, or a hydrate thereof, for the manufacture of a medicament for the treatment or prophylaxis of periodontal disease, in which the derivative of methane bisphosphonic acid, or a hydrate thereof, is represented by following general formula (I): ** (See formula) ** in which X is a straight or branched chain alkyl group having 1 to 8 carbon atoms, a phenyl group or a naphthyl group, wherein said alkyl group is unsubstituted or substituted with a substituent having a nitrogen, oxygen or silicon atom, and wherein said phenyl and naphthyl groups may be substituted with a straight or branched chain alkyl group having 1 to 8 atoms of carbon, a straight or branched chain alkoxy group having 1 to 8 carbon atoms, halogen, or a hydroxyl group; Y is a straight or branched chain alkyl group having 1 to 8 carbon atoms, a trifluoromethyl group, a straight or branched chain alkenyl group having 2 to 8 carbon atoms, a cycloalkyl group having 3 to 8 carbon atoms, an alkoxy group having 1 to 8 carbon or halogen atoms, excluding chlorine, substituted at the position for; each of m and n is independently 0, 1, 2, or 3; * indicates a double link or a single link; A is (D) b- (CH2) c- or - (CH = CH) d-CH =, where D is sulfur, oxygen, NR5 or CH2, where R5 is hydrogen or a straight chain alkyl group or branched having 1 to 8 carbon atoms, c is an integer from 0 to 3, and b is 0 or 1, in which d is 0 or 1, and in which B does not exist when A is - (CH = CH) d-CH =; B is hydrogen, a straight or branched chain alkyl group having 1 to 8 carbon atoms, a hydroxyl group or a trialkylsiloxy group, wherein the residue of said alkyl group is a straight or branched chain alkyl group having 1 to 8 carbon atoms; each of R1, R2, R3 and R4 is, identical or different from each other, hydrogen, a straight or branched chain alkyl group having 1 to 8 carbon atoms, or a pharmaceutically acceptable cation.
