abstract A process for detecting contamination by microorganisms in a selected liquid sample of water, food products and drugs and the enumeration and identification of any such microorganism comprising the sequential steps of: a) filtering the liquid sample through a membrane suitable for retention of microorganisms to retain the microorganisms of said sample in said membrane; b) incubate the membrane from about 1 hour to about 8 hours for the enrichment of the microorganisms; d) detect the presence / absence of one or more microorganisms in the membrane, the number and type of the same detected, characterized by, between stages (b) and (d) stage c) subject the membrane to a stage of amplification in which the amplification stage contains one or more detection agents, in which the amplification stage is selected from the group consisting of the polymerase chain reaction (PCR), amplification based on the nucleic acid sequence ( NASBA), strand shift amplification (SDA) and linked linear amplification (ALL).
