abstract Method for detection and quantificationnselective domoic acid through its toxic effects onnexcitable cells. The present invention relates to a methodnfor the detection and systematic quantification of the presence ofndomoic acid (DOM) in problem samples, such as extracts fromnmarine food or water samples, through the use ofnexcitable cells in an extracellular medium with total sodium ionnor partially substituted. The exposure of cell culturesnexcitable to DOM in a medium like the one mentioned above, results in andecrease in cell viability greater than that observed innpresence of sodium ion, while pretreatment with aninhibitor of DOM-activated receptors said inhibitorntoxic effect With this method, it is possible to determine the presencenof DOM concentrations in the test sample that would not bendetectable in the presence of sodium ion in the extracellular medium.
