abstract | Solution polymerization method of an ion-controllable cationic polymer comprising the steps of: A. preparing a mixed solution of water and acetone solvents; B. heat the solvent solution; C. mixing with said solvent solution 1) one or more functional vinyl cationic monomers, 2) one or more hydrophobic vinyl monomers with alkyl side chains of 1 to 4 carbon atoms, 3) optionally 0% to 30% molar of one or more other vinyl monomers with linear or branched alkyl groups of more than 4 carbons in length, hydroxyalkyl groups, polyoxyalkylene or other functional group, and 4) a free radical initiator, to form a reaction mixture; D. heating the reaction mixture for a time long enough to polymerize the monomers and provide the ion-controllable cationic polymer; E. after polymerization, add water to said reaction mixture to provide an aqueous dispersion of said ion-controllable cationic polymer; F. after adding water, substantially remove all acetone from said reaction mixture; and G. prepare the mixed solvent solution from step A using the acetone removed after the polymerization of step F, and then repeat steps B to G. |
