titleOfInvention OXIDATION RESISTANT POLYETHYLENE AND WEAR RESISTANT FOR HUMAN ARTICULAR PROTESIS AND PROCEDURES TO PREPARE THEM.
abstract A method for improving the wear resistance and oxidation resistance of an implant composed of an ultra high molecular weight polyethylene or a high molecular weight polyethylene, said process comprising the steps of: (1) providing an implant resistant to oxidation; and (2) irradiate the oxidation resistant implant at a radiation dose greater than 4 Mrad but less than approximately 100 Mrad in order to crosslink the implant to improve its wear resistance, without melting or annealing said oxidation resistant implant irradiated wherein said oxidation resistant implant is machined from an oxidation resistant polyethylene, and said oxidation resistant polyethylene is prepared by mixing an antioxidant with the polyethylene powder and melting the polyethylene powder to form a polyethylene resistant to oxidation
