abstract A process for continuously converting solid lignocellulosic biomass material into ethanol in which all or part of the process water is recycled, the process comprising the steps of: (i) providing an aqueous suspension of the biomass material, (ii) submitting, in a reaction vessel, said aqueous suspension at neutral or alkaline conditions and at elevated temperature conditions and / or an oxygen enriched atmosphere to obtain a suspension in which at least partial separation of the biomass material into cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin, (iii) subject the suspension resulting from step (ii) and / or the aqueous phase thereof to a treatment resulting in at least partial hydrolysis of the cellulose and hemicellulose to obtain a suspension and / or aqueous phase containing an amount of microbiologically fermentable sugars that allows the suspension or aqueous phase to be used as an ethanolic fermentation medium, (iv) somet er the suspension and / or aqueous phase of stage (iii) at least one stage of fermentation of the ethanol, (v) separating the ethanol from the fermentation medium resulting from stage (iv) resulting in a wastewater effluent of fermentation containing a level of inhibitory substances that, if present in any of the preceding stages (ii) to (iv), would be speed limiting or inhibitor; (vi) subjecting said wastewater effluent to a treatment whereby the level of the inhibitory substances is reduced to a level that, if the wastewater effluent is introduced in any of the preceding stages (ii) to (iv), It is not speed limiting or inhibitor; (vii) introduce all or part of the effluent from wastewater treated in any of the preceding stages (ii) to (v), and (viii) repeat steps (i) to (vii) continuously.
