titleOfInvention | TRANSGENIC PLANT FOR THE DEGRADATION OF LINDANO. |
abstract | Transgenic plant for degradation ofnLindanen n n The present invention relates to a plant that has been genetically modified to be able to initiate the process of degradation of lindane (γ-HCH). To this end, the gene called linA , from a soil bacterium, Sphingomonas paucimobilis , has been introduced into the plant. This gene codes for an enzyme that has the ability to initiate the process of degradation of lindane (γ-HCH). Specifically, linA is responsible for transforming lindane into 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene, a product of lower toxicity, volatile and easier degradation in the environment. The resulting transgenic plant is capable of growing in a medium that contains lindane and degrades it, unlike the plant that does not contain the linA gene, which does not grow in the presence of this compound. This or another plant of more robust bearing and with greater root system in which the linA gene is introduced can be used to recover soils contaminated with the herbicide lindane |
