It is obtained from anxanthophyll, zeaxanthin, of formula II (Scheme 2), by reactionnwith an oxidizing agent, consisting of halogenated derivatives,npreferably brominated and chlorinated or mixture of both, ofnhydantoins, in an aqueous-organic environment and,neventually, in the presence of a catalyst of the type ofnderivatives ofnN-oxyl-2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine.n n n Astaxanthin has application in thenaquaculture for the pigmentation of aquatic species like somenSalmonids and crustaceans, as well as nutraceuticals for consumptionnhuman.
