A process for inhibiting the ethylene response in a plant or plant product comprising the steps of contacting the plant or plant product with a composition comprising a compound prepared by reacting, in an inert environment, a metal amide salt and a halogenated carbine, optionally in the presence of a non-reactive solvent, to form a compound having the following structure in which n is a number from 1 to 4 and R is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, saturated C1 to C4 alkyl or unsaturated, hydroxy, halogen, C1 to C4 alkoxy, amino and carboxy, and in which the composition is fundamentally free of methyl cyclopropane, methylcyclopropanes and butanes. |
