titleOfInvention NEW PROCEDURE FOR THE ELIMINATION OF WATER NITRATES BY REDUCTION TO NITROGEN GAS.
abstract New nitrate removal procedurenof water by reduction to nitrogen gas.n n n The procedure is applicable to thenpurification, purification for discharge to public channel, thenminimization of nitrogen content in animal wastenprior to use as fertilizer, aquifer remediation andnwater reuse in aquaculture.n n n The procedure reduces the nitrates containednin water to nitrites using zinc and a metal catalyst;nthen, the nitrites are reduced to nitrogen bynsulfamic acid used in stoichiometric quantity or in lightnmolar defect.n n n Zinc is recovered from the heterogeneous phase ofnzinc, catalyst and zinc hydroxide formed in the reduction bynZinc hydroxide solution as zincate at a pH greater than 11.5.nThis zincate is reprecipitated as hydroxide at pH 10 and separated bynfiltration.
