POLYMERS SENSITIVE TO IONS AND AVAILABLE IN HARD WATER AND APPLICATIONS OF THE SAME. |
abstract |
Ion-sensitive polymer, in which the polymer is insoluble in a saline solution containing at least about 0.3 weight percent of salt, said salt comprising one or more monovalent or multivalent ions; wherein the polymer is soluble in tap water containing up to approximately 500 ppm of one or more multivalent ions; and wherein the polymer is not formed from acrylic acid or methacrylic acid monomers; and wherein the polymer is formed from a) one or more monomers selected from styrenesulfonic acid (SS); sodium salt of styrenesulfonic acid (NaSS); 2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonic acid (AMPS); 2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonic acid sodium salt (NaAMPS); vinyl sulfonic acid; sodium salt of vinyl sulfonic acid; alkyl acrylates containing sulfonate, in which the alkyl group contains from 2 to 4 carbon atoms; sodium salt of alkyl acrylates containing sulfonate, in which the alkyl group contains from 2 to 4 carbon atoms; alkyl methacrylates containing sulfonate, in which the alkyl group contains from 2 to 4 carbon atoms; sodium salt of alkyl methacrylates containing sulfonate, in which the alkyl group contains from 2 to 4 carbon atoms; and from b) one or more alkyl acrylates. |
