abstract Process for the production of a liquid alkoxytrimethylsilane of general formula: RO-SiMe3 wherein Me is methyl and R is a substituent of monovalent aliphatic hydrocarbon having from 14 to 20 carbon atoms, said fluid being substantially free of organic and inorganic compounds, whose process comprises the steps of: (a) melting a solid alcohol of the general formula R-OH wherein R is defined as above; (b) catalyzing said molten alcohol with 20 to 200 ppm of trifluoromethanesulfonic acid; (c) reacting said catalyzed molten alcohol at a temperature ranging from 10 ° C above the melting point of said alcohol to 100 ° C in an anhydrous inert atmosphere, with at least a stoichiometric equivalent amount of a trimethylsilylation agent; (d) separating any reaction byproduct and excess trimethylsilylation agent; (e) neutralize the trifluoromethanesulfonic acid catalyst with an excess of an anhydrous base; and (f) separating salts, from said liquid alkoxytrimethylsilane, by filtration.
