abstract | Continuous process that is for the production of poly (trimethylene terephthalate) and comprises the steps of: (a) continuously providing a liquid feed mixture to a rapid vaporization boiler, the liquid feed mixture comprising a catalyst and at least one of the members of the group consisting of bis-3-hydroxypropyl terephthalate and low molecular weight polyesters containing propylene groups and terephthalate groups, and the liquid feed mixture having a molar ratio of propylene groups to terephthalate groups of 1, 1 to 2 , two; (b) continuously vaporize the by-products in the rapid vaporization boiler and remove them from the rapid vaporization boiler in the form of a first stream of gaseous by-products, and continuously withdraw a liquid reaction product in the vaporization boiler from the rapid vaporization boiler fast having a molar ratio of propylene groups to terephthalate groups of less than about 1.5; (c) continuously providing the liquid reaction product in the rapid vaporization boiler to a prepolymer, and continuously polymerizing the reaction product of the rapid vaporization boiler in the prepolymerizer to form a poly (trimethylene terephthalate) prepolymer and a second gas by-product stream; (d) continuously remove from the prepolymerizer the poly (trimethylene terephthalate) prepolymer, the prepolymer having a relative viscosity of at least about 5; (e) continuously providing the poly (trimethylene terephthalate) prepolymer to a final polymerizer, and continuously polymerizing the poly (trimethylene terephthalate) prepolymer in the final polymerizer to form a higher molecular weight poly (trimethylene terephthalate) and a third stream of gaseous byproducts; and (f) continuously removing the highest molecular weight poly (trimethylene terephthalate) from the final polymerizer, having the highest molecular weight poly (trimethylene terephthalate) having a relative viscosity of at least about 17. |
