abstract An improved process for producing nitric acid by oxidation of gaseous ammonia to form gaseous dinitrogen tetroxide, by reacting dinitrogen tetroxide with water in an absorption zone to form aqueous nitric acid and gaseous nitric oxide, separating the nitric acid / nitric oxide stream from the absorption zone and feeding the current to a nitric acid bleaching zone, eliminating the nitric acid impurities in the bleaching zone to form product nitric acid and adding supplementary gaseous oxygen to one or more of the reaction streams to increase the production of nitric acid and / or its concentration, the improvement consisting in injecting the supplemental oxygen into a process stream containing nitric acid to form a mixture of gas / liquid bubbles consisting of a fine dispersion of gas bubbles which have diameters of less than about 0.1 mm and which thus provide a greater interfacial surface between the gas bubbles and the liquid mixture.
