abstract A procedure for the purification and isolation of ketosteroids from mixtures containing them by applying the benzyl hydrazones mentioned in the description, a procedure that is especially characterized by the following points considered separately or in combination: a) consists in reacting the benzyl hydrazide on a solution of said mixture in a suitable solvent, thus selectively precipitating the benzyl hydrazone of a ketosteroid in separating this benzyl hydrazone from the benzyl hydrazones that have been dissolved and from the other components of the mixture and in regenerating the ketosteroid from this hydrazone; b) the reaction It is carried out hot or cold; c) said solvent is a neutral solvent such as methanolel isopropanolel oioxane or benzene; d) the reaction is carried out in the presence of an acidic agent; e) the regeneration of the ketosteroid from the hydrazone is carried out by acid hydrolysis or by permutation functions onal by means of an aldehyde or a ketone; f) said ketosteroid is the estrone, an ester of cortisone, an ester of deoxycorticosterone, the cis-testosterone, a 21-ester of 31120-triceto-1721-dihydroxy preganan or nor-cholestenolone.
