abstract AN ALTERNATIVE REACTION SYSTEM FOR THE PRODUCTION OF QUATERNARY AMMONIUM ESTERS TO BE USED AS TISSUE SOFTENERS IS DESCRIBED IN THE PRESENT INVENTION. THE PROCESS BEGINS FROM A CHLOROEPOXIDE WHICH IS REACTED WITH AMMONIA AND WATER TO FORM A PRIMARY AMINOPOLIOL. THEN A REDUCTIVE ALKYLATION OF THE PRIMARY AMINE IS CARRIED OUT AND THEN THE SECONDARY AMINE WITH ALDEHYDES TO OBTAIN AN INTERMEDIATE TERTIARY AMINOPOLIOL. THE FIRST PART OF THE PROCESS FOLLOWS SOME STEPS OF ESTERIFICATION AND QUATERNIZATION KNOWN ALREADY IN THE PRODUCTION OF QUATERNIZED AMMONIUM COMPOUNDS USED AS TISSUE SOFTENERS.
