AZOLN-CH2CH2-N(CH2CO2R)2 (I) AZOL = PYRAZOLE; 3,5-DIMETHYLPYRAZOLE; INDAZOLE; ETC. R = ALKYL O H O NA THE COMPOUNDS, OF GENERAL STRUCTURE (I), ARE OBTAINED BY THE ALKYLATION REACTION OF METHYL IMINODIACETATE WITH N-BROMOETHYLAZOLES AND SUBSEQUENT HYDROLYSIS IN AN ACID OR BASIC MEDIUM. THE PROCEDURE MAY BE MODIFIED BY ALTERNATIVE SYNTHETIC ROUTES INVOLVING N-AMINOETHYLAZOLES AS STARTING PRODUCTS OR THE USE OF CYCLATION PROCESSES IN THE PREPARATION OF THE N-SUBSTITUTED AZOLE. THEY CAN BE APPLIED IN SPECTROSCOPY AND NUCLEAR MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING (NMR) OF HYDROGEN OR OTHER NUCLEI AS EXTRINSIC PROBE OF CA2+, MG2+ OR OTHER METAL IONS AND AS CONTRAST AGENTS, IN SOLUTIONS, BIOLOGICAL EXTRACTS, TISSUES, WHOLE ANIMALS AND HUMANS.
