A SOLID TITANIUM COMPOUND, CONTAINING A COMPOUND OF TITANIUM, MAGNESIUM, A HALOGEN AND A COMPONENT (I) ELECTRONIC DONOR, IS FIRST REACTED WITH AN ALUMINUM COMPOUND AND AN ADDITIONAL ELECTRONIC DONOR COMPOUND (II). THE REACTION MIXTURE IS THEN ACTIVATED BY REACTION WITH CARBON DIOXIDE. THE CATALYST SYSTEM SO PRODUCED IS USED IN CONJUNCTION WITH AN ALUMINUM COMPOUND FOR THE C3 POLYMERIZATION OF AMOUNTS OF THE COMPONENT (II) ELECTRONIC DONOR FOR THE ABOVE POLYMERIZATION.
