IT CONSISTS OF (A) SIMULTANEOUSLY MIXING A STREAM OF NSI2OSI6 AND A STREAM OF A HYDROXYALKYL SUBSTITUTED CYCLIC ETHER, EACH DISSOLVED IN AN INERT ORGANIC SOLVENT, AND (B) RAPIDLY SEPARATING THE NITRIC ACID AND NITRATOALKYL CO-PRODUCTS BEFORE THEY CAN REACT BETWEEN YES, TO BREAK THE RING OF ETHER. STEP (B) IS CONVENIENTLY CARRIED OUT BY SHORT COOLING THE PRODUCT STREAM, WITHIN APPROXIMATELY 15 SECONDS AFTER ITS FORMATION, IN AN AQUEOUS BASIC SOLUTION IN WHICH THE NITRIC ACID IS TRANSFERRED FROM THE ORGANIC PHASE AND NEUTRALIZED. THE INVENTION IS USEFUL FOR OBTAINING OXIRANES AND OXETANES SUBSTITUTED WITH NITRATE ALKYL.
