titleOfInvention | Biological fluid collection device |
abstract | A biological fluid collection device (10) comprising: a housing (20) having a sidewall (30), a top wall (34), a bottom wall (32), a receiving port (42) extending in a radial direction of the housing and defined between the top wall and the bottom wall, a housing flow channel (40), and an inlet port (38), the housing flow channel in fluid communication with the inlet port; a puncturing element (22) at least partially disposed within the housing and transitionable between a pre-actuated position wherein the puncturing element is retained within the housing and a puncturing position wherein at least a portion of the puncturing element extends through the inlet port of the housing for establishing fluid communication with the housing flow channel; and a cartridge (24) removably connectable to the receiving port (42) of the housing between the top wall and the bottom wall, the cartridge defining a cartridge flow channel (54) therein, wherein the cartridge comprises a pair of resiliently deflectable arms (67) releasably engagable with the receiving port of the housing for securing the cartridge to the housing, wherein the pair of arms are configured for engaging with an interference surface (69) disposed within the receiving port, and wherein the arms are configured to be squeezed to deflect the arms out of engagement with the interference surface, wherein, with the cartridge connected to the housing, the cartridge flow channel is in fluid communication with the housing flow channel, and wherein, with the cartridge disconnected from the housing, the cartridge flow channel is sealed. The biological fluid collection device thus provides a closed system that reduces the exposure of a blood sample. |
