abstract There is provided an aerosol-generating system having an aerosol-generating device (100) comprising a housing (110) having a chamber (120) defining a heating zone, the chamber sized to receive at least a portion of an aerosol-generating article (10). The aerosol-generating device (100) comprises an induction element (130, 930) disposed around, or adjacent to, the heating zone. The induction element (130, 930) comprises a first coil and a second coil. The aerosol-generating device (100) also comprises a power supply (140) and a controller (150) connected to the induction element (130, 930). The controller (150) is configured to: actuate the first coil to generate a first alternating magnetic field within the heating zone, the first alternating magnetic field having a first frequency; and actuate the second coil to generate a second alternating magnetic field within the heating zone, the second alternating magnetic field having a second frequency. The controller (150) actuates the first coil and the second coil to sequentially provide the first alternating magnetic field for a first period of time followed by the second alternating magnetic field frequency for a second period of time
