A method for regulating the pH of water comprising at least one of dissolved CO 2 , bicarbonate, and other carbonate derivatives, is provided. The method comprises placing at least one melanin form into contact with the water, the at least one melanin form comprising eumelanin embedded within an inert material which does not dissolve in water. If the starting pH of the water prior to contact with the at least one melanin form is greater than 7.0, the presence of the at least one melanin form causes the starting pH to be increased. If the starting pH of the water prior to contact with the at least one melanin form is less than 7.0, the presence of the at least one melanin form causes the starting pH to be decreased. |
