abstract The present invention relates to a selective process for the preparation of acetals or ethers. In particular, the process involves selective catalytic hydrogenolysis of a trihydrocarbyl orthoester so as to control the extent of the dealcoholization to obtain either the corresponding acetal product or the corresponding ether product. The ether products that can be prepared according to the present invention include ethers which are suitable for use as base oils in lubricating compositions.
