abstract The invention relates to a method for detecting hydrocarbon contamination in a sample. The method comprises contacting a sample with a molecular probe. The molecular probe has photoluminescence which is sensitive to the environment. The photoluminescence of the molecular probe is collected. The method includes determining whether the photoluminescence is indicative of a sample contaminated with hydrocarbons. The invention also relates to a test strip for detecting hydrocarbon contamination in a sample. The test strip comprises a molecular probe incorporated into a substrate and / or immobilized on the substrate, the photoluminescent molecular probe being environmentally sensitive to the hydrocarbon contaminated sample.
