abstract The apparatus (123), which serves for treating a process material, such as sewage or animal waste, and for removing ammonia therefrom, comprises a reactor (2) with n- at least one microwave unit (8A, 8B) including at least one microwave generator (81) provided for transferring microwave energy to the process material, and n- at least one vessel (20) having n- at least one inlet opening (201, 205) for receiving the process material; n- at least one outlet opening (202, 203) for removing or circulating the treated process material; and n- at least one exit channel (204) for removing ammonia enriched gases stripped from the process material. n According to the invention at least one transfer tube (25) is provided, n- which is made from microwave-transmissible material; n- which is connected with a 1st end (251) to one of the outlet openings (202) of the vessel (20); n- which is connected with at least one 2nd end (252) to one of the inlet openings (205) of the vessel (20); and n- which is arranged at least partially in front of the microwave unit (8A, 8B) so that microwave energy is transferable to the transferred process material; and that na pump (63) is provided, with which the process material is transferable through the at least one transfer tube (25).
