titleOfInvention Coupon design for enhanced color sensitivity for colorimetric-based chemical analysis of liquids
abstract The invention relates to a system for monitoring an analyte concentration in a liquid. The system according to the invention contains a coupon comprising an absorbent body with a window passing through it, the liquid being maintained in said window by capillary action and surface tension. A reagent is in the absorbent body, the reagent being able to diffuse into the window to react with an analyte in the liquid, or the reagent being able to react with the analyte inside the coupon itself, the by-products of color indication of the reaction diffusing into the window, the analyte being present in an analyte concentration, to form a reagent with a color, the color having an intensity correlated with the analyte concentration. A light source is used to pass light into the window, the light being attenuated by the color proportional to the analyte concentration to form an attenuated light. A detector is used to measure the intensity of the attenuated light. Alternatively, the color change can be read by the eye and compared to a color chart relating the color to an analyte concentration.
