titleOfInvention A process for polymerizing cyclic oligomers of polyamides
abstract The invention relates to a process for producing high molecular weight polyamide polymers, such as 6/66 polymers, using a reactant stream which contains at least one lactam and cyclic oligomers. The stream is reacted with at least one high temperature diamine to ring the cyclic oligomers for the purpose of producing amide prepolymers which are endcapped by amine groups. The prepolymers are then reacted with at least one diacid at a high temperature to form 6/66 polyamide copolymers. Cyclic oligomers can be formed as by-products during standard polymerization of polyamide polymers from monomers such as caprolactam, hexamethylenediamine and adipic acid.
