abstract | The present invention is directed to NADCs with exceptional thickening power in various apolar media. The NADCs consist of a core which is swellable and not soluble in said media, and a covalently-bonded outer layer of a dispersing or stabilizing polymer that surrounds the core. Due to the good compatibility of the core and the dispersing-polymer-part of the NADC with non-aqueous media, the stability of the resulting dispersion is guaranteed, whereby the compatibility of the dispersing polymer and the solid core was found to become less relevant due to the covalent bonding. This allows the production of the claimed NADCs that are fully compatible with apolar (nonaqueous) media and have exceptional thickening, combined with a good stability. In an embodiment the dispersing-polymer-part of the NADCs contain both acidic and basic moieties. The invention also relates to NADCs where the dispersing polymer further contains one or more moieties derived from bicyclic (meth)acrylate esters. n The invention also relates to a process to make such NADCs. Further, the invention relates to the use of the NADCs as thickeners. |
