abstract The invention relates to a method for detecting and quantifying the presence of elements comprising at least the following steps, for an iteration 1+1: (303) obtaining a component, formula (I), of the vector Y of the observed spectrum for a given element j and a reference channel i, using a multinomial law and considering the values obtained during a preceding iteration I, formula (II), wherein yi corresponds to the measurement made on the channel i, formula (III), correspond to the values obtained during the preceding iteration I, for the various elements, formula (IV), wherein j=1, ..., N and for the M channels; (304) using the found values (formula (V) to determine, in accordance with a gamma law, a value corresponding to the proportion of an element, formula (VI), wherein j ranges from 1 to N, on the N reference spectra, and α and β are fixed values; and (307) determining an estimated value for a given element j, formula (VII), and associating a credibility value with said estimated proportion value.
