abstract Methods and apparatus for sensing are disclosed. In one disclosed arrangement an object is optically levitated in a light field. The polarization of the light field is modulated such that the polarization varies periodically at a driving frequency. The polarization couples to a non-spherically symmetric polarizability of the object in such a way as to cause the object to rotate in the light field at a rotation frequency that is equal to a rational fraction of the driving frequency. A phase of the rotation of the object relative to the modulation of the polarization is measured in order to detect an external torque or external force applied to the rotating object, thereby sensing a property of the environment of the rotating object.
