abstract | An image display device mounted on a head of an observer for use includes: a video light generation unit that generates video light modulated based on a video signal; a light scanner that is located on a lateral side of the head of the observer, performs main scanning on the video light in a first direction, and performs sub-scanning on the video light in a second direction orthogonal to the first direction; and a diffraction optical element on which the video light scanned by the light scanner is incident and which diffracts the incident video light and emits the video light toward one eye of the observer, wherein for the video light at an intersection point between a center of an amplitude of the main scanning and a center of an amplitude of the sub-scanning, a normal line at the intersection point of the surface of the diffraction optical element is inclined with respect to a virtual plane including a center of the one eye of the observer, a center of the other eye of the observer, and the intersection point so that light reflected from a surface of the diffraction optical element is not incident on the other eye of the observer. |
