The present invention relates to a process for the preparation of oxymethylene dialkyl ethers and their direct use as fuel additives. Oligomeric oxymethylene dialkyl ethers (OMDAE) can be prepared simply and directly by the following process and used as an additive in fuels. At least one alcohol and / or carboxylic acid are reacted with at least one aldehyde and / or ketone in the presence of an acidic catalyst.
