abstract A liquid crystal composition contains any one or two or more of compounds represented by general formula (i) below and any one or two or more of compounds represented by general formula (ii) below. In the formulae below, R 11a and R 21a each independently represent an alkyl group having 1 to 8 carbon atoms; one or nonadjacent two or more -CH 2 - in the alkyl group may be each independently substituted by -CH=CH-, -C‰¡C-, -O-, -CO-, - COO-, or -OCO-; one or two or more hydrogen atoms in the alkyl group may be each independently substituted by a fluorine atom or a chlorine atom; m 11 represents 1 or 2; A 11 represents a trans-1,4-cyclohexylene group or a 1,4-phenylene group which may have a fluorine atom or a chlorine atom substituted for a hydrogen atom; when m 11 is 1, A 11 represents a 1,4-phenylene group which may have a fluorine atom or a chlorine atom substituted for a hydrogen atom; when m 11 is 2, a plurality of A 11 may be the same or different, and at least one A 11 represents a 1,4-phenylene group which may have a fluorine atom or a chlorine atom substituted for a hydrogen atom may be substituted; X 11 represents a hydrogen atom, a fluorine atom, or a chlorine atom; X 12 represents a hydrogen atom, a fluorine atom, a chlorine atom, a cyano group, -CF 3 , or -OCF 3 ; m 21 represents 0 or 1; X 21 , X 22 , X 23 , and X 24 each independently represent a hydrogen atom, a fluorine atom, or a chlorine atom; and X 25 represents a hydrogen atom, a fluorine atom, a chlorine atom, a cyano group, -CF 3 , or -OCF 3 .
