titleOfInvention Method for recovering and optionally separating lanthanides in the form of their chlorides or oxides from mineral waste and residual materials
abstract The present invention relates to a process for the recovery of lanthanides from mineral wastes, from residues, from composite materials or from composite materials which have one or more inorganic components, comprising the following steps:n(a) crushing waste, residual materials, composite materials or composite materials or providing waste, residual materials, composite materials or composite materials in shredded form,nb) comminuting the material from step a) by means of a mill to a millbase,nc) pulverizing the millbase obtained in step b) by means of a grinding process in which the resulting powder particles are activated mechanochemically,nd) leaching the powder particles obtained in step c) with the aid of an aqueous, basic solution,ne) transferring the lanthanide hydroxides contained in the aqueous, basic solution into a hydrochloric or phosphoric acid solution, andnf) recovering the lanthanide chlorides from said hydrochloric acid or phosphoric acid solution. The method preferably uses a high energy ball mill in step c). The extraction of the lanthanide chlorides is preferably carried out by means of a liquid-liquid extraction using an organic solvent such as di- (2-ethyl-hexyl) phosphoric acid, in which different lanthanide chlorides are separated from each other. The chlorides can be converted into the respective oxides by heating them in an oxygen-containing atmosphere, preferably being treated at a temperature of between 800 and 1000 ° C.
