Anon-molecularly imprinted polymer is provided that is capable of adsorbing tobacco-specific nitrosamines, said polymer being of a monomer that has polar functionality and cross-linker which is non-acidic, one of said monomers being hydrophilic, the other being hydrophobic. Beads may be made by suspension polymerizing the monomer and cross-linker in an aqueous medium in the presence of a steric stabilizer and a porogen and separating the polymerized material from the reaction mixture. The beads may be useful, for example, in analysis and separation of nitrosamines from biological fluids and in the treatment and manufacture of tobacco products and tobacco materials. |
