abstract The invention relates to a surge arrester (10) comprising at least one resistor element (90, 91, 92) and a cage (80), in which the at least one resistor element (90, 91, 92) is arranged, wherein the cage (80) comprises an upper holder (20), a lower holder (40) and at least three insulating rods (70), which are each held with one bar end thereof by the upper holder (20) and with the other bar end thereof by the lower holder (40). The invention provides for the upper holder (20) and the lower holder (40) to be configured in such a way that they enable in each case at least two different positions for at least one of the insulating rods (70), relative to the two holders, and the at least one insulating rod (70) can be positioned differently relative to the two holders (20), (40).
